Orygen operates the largest onshore wind farm complex in Peru Wayra (I and II) with 310 MW, which is a key part of their growing renewable energy portfolio. Located in a remote desert area, the farm plays a crucial role in contributing to the country’s clean energy goals.

Challenge

Orygen faced the challenge of ensuring smooth monitoring and fault detection during a crucial transition period. After the warranty period had expired for the assets, the wind turbines (WTGs) were handed over for ongoing maintenance. The main concerns were ensuring no faults were missed, maintaining service standards, and managing unscheduled maintenance, all while dealing with an organisational change.

The stakes were high, as any lapses in monitoring could have led to unaddressed faults, potential downtime, and operational delays. Furthermore, the wind farm complex is located in a remote desert region, making it difficult to quickly address issues in real time.

Solution

ONYX deployed its vibration Monitoring solution for this project. Wind turbine shadow monitoring involves analysing the raw data from existing CMS without interfering with the original system’s operations. This solution enabled Orygen to continue monitoring turbine performance and detecting potential faults after the warranty period, providing a comprehensive view of the turbine’s health, while also enhancing O&M strategy in a win-win collaboration between Orygen and the service maintainer – planning ahead of issues, saving resources and costs, and reducing downtime.
