At Hiep Thanh, one of Vietnam’s largest operational offshore wind farms, Ecotech utilised ONYX’s independent wind turbine inspection capability to build a robust technical case, secure a warranty bond extension and improve OEM accountability.

Company

Ecotech Vietnam owns and operates the 78MW Hiep Thanh Offshore Wind Farm located nearshore 3km off the coast of Tra Vinh province in South Vietnam. Completed in 2021,  the wind farm comprises 18 Siemens Gamesa 5.0-145 wind turbines able to provide energy to up to 180,000 households.

Challenge

Despite being a relatively young site, the farm was already experiencing several major component issues. The OEM provided limited visibility on failure causes or corrective actions, leaving Ecotech facing main bearing, blade, gearbox, and nose-cone failures with high costs and lost production.

With end of warranty approaching, Ecotech required an independent, highly skilled partner to deliver a clear and defensible asset assessment to support warranty claims.

Ecotech chose ONYX for its engineering depth across both inspection and data analysis, and responsive support. Key decision makers were also familiar with ONYX’s proven heritage in condition monitoring and end of warranty services.

Solution

To address the farm’s critical needs, ONYX deployed a comprehensive inspection and diagnostic package across all 18 turbines, drawing on a depth of offshore expertise built up across hundreds of turbines in Europe since 2008, including major programmes for SSE and ScottishPower Renewables at East Anglia ONE.

ecoCMS Portable provided detailed insights into the condition of the main bearing, gearbox, and associated drivetrain components through portable drivetrain health assessment.

The full end of warranty inspection scope included borescope inspection of drivetrain and pitch bearings, lubrication analysis, walkdown inspections across all turbines, and walkdown inspection training to build Ecotech’s in-house reliability capabilities.

This combined approach gave the client a complete, evidence-based assessment of asset condition along with practical knowledge transfer to support long-term reliability improvement.
