Company

The Clearway Energy Group is leading the transition to a world powered by clean energy.

Along with their public affiliate Clearway Energy, Inc., they own and operate 10.4 gigawatts of renewable and conventional energy assets across the country. Clearway Energy Group was eager to gain an accurate understanding of the foundations of its whole Cedro Hill (Texas, USA) site to support the asset life of the farm.

Challenge

Preliminary testing on a subset of the farm’s foundation provided initial visibility of the health and longevity of the foundations, however not the complete project insight that provides confidence for long-term management.

The need was clear: ensure visibility over the health of foundations across the whole wind farm to handle increased fatigue and maximise the asset life. A scalable, efficient monitoring solution was needed.

Solution

Clearway Energy Group selected to leverage its existing drivetrain condition monitoring system, ecoCMS, to provide continuous monitoring of all foundations alongside existing drivetrain monitoring. Given our longstanding relationship with Clearway Energy Group, where we’ve previously provided drivetrain condition monitoring, this project was a natural extension of our collaboration.

“Our work with Clearway Energy Group at Cedro Hill is more than just an initiative; it is a new smarter approach to monitoring foundation health.

The result is an innovative, cost-effective solution for foundation monitoring across an expansive site. We recognise the increased importance of foundation health for owner-operators in securing the maximum value out of their assets.

Benefits

By leveraging existing ecoCMS installations, farm-wide insights were available at the cost of subset testing (typically 10% of the site), providing clear, actionable trends and the ability to plan for maintenance with precision. This will also reduce the threat of unexpected failures, allowing for coordinated, cost-effective repairs when needed.

Through innovation and collaborative effort between Clearway Energy Group and ONYX Insight, the Cedro Hill project stands as a testament to the power of predictive technology in delivering accurate, insightful turbine foundation monitoring.

Most valuable insights

  1. Farm-wide Insights at Subset Costs
Achieving comprehensive monitoring coverage at a fraction of the anticipated cost.
  2. Get More Out of Your Drivetrain CMS
By utilising existing drivetrain CMS, Clearway Energy Group was able to achieve farm-wide foundation monitoring without additional hardware or the need for on-site turbine climbs.
  3. Actionable Intelligence
Providing Clearway Energy with the data necessary to plan maintenance and repairs proactively, minimising downtime and costs.
