The Company

Clearlight Energy, one of North America’s leading private renewable energy Companies, owns and operates 4,300 MW across 54 assets of utility scale solar, wind, battery storage, and renewable natural gas, with over 1,200 MW in its development pipeline.

Challenges

As Clearlight scaled its operations, the organisation faced significant challenges in maintaining operational efficiency and reducing downtime. The primary issues included:

  1. Reactive Maintenance Costs: A high number of reactive corrective actions for turbine drivetrains and other systems resulted in unnecessary costs. These included crane mobilisation, extended downtime, and widespread damage due to delayed interventions.
  2. Data Fragmentation: Clearlight relied on multiple tools, including SharePoint, Excel, email and Power BI, to manage diagnostic reports, inspection data, and historical decisions. This approach was inefficient and lacked scalability, creating bottlenecks in decision-making processes.
  3. Scalability and Proactivity: The existing processes were no longer scalable, and the lack of a unified system impacted Clearlight’s ability to implement proactive maintenance strategies effectively.

Most Valuable Insights

One notable example of the software’s impact occurred during Clearlight’s transition to a hybrid/self-perform O&M model for one wind farm. Over 290 turbines were seamlessly onboarded from a full-service agreement and integrated into Clearlight ‘s processes without disruptions. This shift enabled LS Power to take over all major corrective management for these turbines, maintaining high operational efficiency, reducing unplanned downtime, and saving significant costs.

Additionally, dashboards proved valuable for senior leadership, providing clear insights into demand planning, corrective campaigns, and overall performance. These tools enabled Clearlight to identify opportunities for improvement year after year, driving long-term sustainability.
