As the wind industry continues to grow and develop, sharing knowledge, data and expertise is one of the main ways we can all ensure it meets its full potential.
Learning from one another’s experiences, what’s working, and what’s not, can help us pinpoint the challenges to be overcome and more efficiently work towards their solution. This will be all the more important as the industry continues to scale up.
Pooling experience will better prepare owners and operators for the larger, more complex turbines that are the future of the wind sector, and ensure O&M expenditure remains as low as possible even as these assets are deployed in new, more challenging environments – both on- and offshore.
With these factors in mind, the open exchange of ideas is very much at the heart of this edition. Our European Wind Turbine Technical Symposium saw over 50 asset and operations managers come together to discuss the tactical and strategic challenges facing them, and our poll results shed light on what they think can be done to overcome these.
Key issues covered included reducing the LCOE, expanding the capacity of predictive analytics solutions, and improving the quality of data gathered from inspections in the field. Equally, while access to data remains a concern among some, delegates at the event shared some interesting thoughts on how existing sources of data can be made to work harder and add value in order to boost the efficiency of assets.
In line with our focus on real-world engineering solutions, ONYX InSight’s team in Korea has been taking part in a joint R&D project with Seoul National University, dedicated to applying machine learning and LiDAR measurement techniques to improve the yaw alignment of wind turbines, and we’re excited to now be able to share further details on the project and the publication of its key findings.
